Scholarships: Peggy Vatter Memorial Scholarship
For All

The WSTA Peggy Vatter Memorial Scholarship Committee is proud to announce this year's recipients;


Natalie Johnson
Natalie is a science teacher at Squalicum High School in Bellingham and requested funds to help pay for the cost of going through the National Board Certification process. She was particularly interested in learning more through the coaching and reflective experience how to differentiate her curriculum in order to better help low-achievers develop academic confidence.

Jaclyn Newell
Jaclyn is a preservice teacher enrolled in the Master's in Education program at Washington State University, working towards her degree as a high school science teacher. She is a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Scholarships: Science Teacher of the Year Awards

Science Teacher of the Year Awards


Washington Science Teachers Association is an organization dedicated to advocating and promoting quality advancement of science education. Members of the Washington State Science Community are encouraged to nominate a deserving teacher of science. To this end, we offer recognition through the State Science Teacher of the Year Awards. Awards are made at the following levels: elementary, middle, secondary & higher education.


Special Recognition Awards are also available for groups, or individuals, outside of teaching who make outstanding contributions to the advancement of science education.


Minimum Requirements

  • Three years of science teaching experience
  • Current assignment as a teacher of science: elementary, middle, secondary & higher education

Demonstrated Qualities

  • Excitement and enthusiasm for teaching science
  • Effective delivery of scientific content and processes
  • Promotion of science education beyond the classroom

Benefits If Selected

  • Local and state recognition
  • Certificate of achievement
  • Honorarium of $500* to be spent at the discretion of the awardee
  • WSTA Conference, 2008, registration fee waived
  • Fee for Friday evening’s banquet for presentation of awards for awardee and one guest will also be waived

*This honorarium is provided through an endowment fund originally established by Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, Washington Science Teachers Association and the Pacific Science Center.



Nomination Procedure:


The following items need to be submitted by June 30, 2008:

  • Biographical Information
  • Resume
  • 2-3 letters supporting the nominee, one being from an administrator and the other(s) from colleague(s) or student




NOMINATION PROCEDURE:


The nomination form for selection as Science Teacher of the Year consists of three (3) sections.


  • BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
  • ADMINISTRATIVE RECOMMENDATION (at least one)
  • SUPPORTING RECOMMENDATION(S) (2 or 3)

These recommendations should be completed by persons who have an intimate knowledge of the nominee’s efforts toward the advancement of science education and should be limited to 500 words or less.


The completed packet must be postmarked by June 30, 2008 and mailed to:
