Science Teacher of the Year Awards
Overview
Washington Science Teachers Association is an organization dedicated to advocating and promoting quality advancement of science education. Members of the Washington State Science Community are encouraged to nominate a deserving teacher of science. To this end, we offer recognition through the State Science Teacher of the Year Awards. Awards are made at the following levels: elementary, middle, secondary & higher education.
Minimum Requirements
· Three years of science teaching experience.
· Current assignment as a teacher of science: elementary, middle, secondary & higher education
Demonstrated Qualities
· Excitement and enthusiasm for teaching science
· Effective delivery of scientific content and processes
· Promotion of science education beyond the classroom
Award
· Local and state recognition
· Certificate of achievement
· Honorarium of $500 * to be spent at the discretion of the awardee
· WSTA Conference in Moses Lake - March 19-21, 2009 (registration fee waived)
· Fee for Friday evening’s banquet for presentation of awards for awardee and one guest is waived
Nomination Procedure
The nomination process for selection as Science Teacher of the Year consists of three (3) sections:
1. Biographical Information – a current resume that contains contact information, confirms eligibility, and work experience; completed by nominee
2. Administrative Recommendation – a letter from an administrative supervisor supporting the demonstrated qualities in the nominees classroom and/or beyond
3. Supporting Letters of Recommendation (2 or 3) – additional letters from either a colleague, another administrator, parent, or student stating the who can attest of the nominees
These recommendations should be completed by persons who have an intimate knowledge of the nominee’s efforts toward the advancement of science education and should be limited to 500 words or less.
Deadline:
All three items listed above must be submitted by February 13, 2010

Completed documents (biographical information and letters of support) may be submitted either electronically or by mail to either of the individuals below. If submitting by mail, please indicate on the envelope, “WSTA Teacher of the Year Award”.
